Same title, multiple formats

I have a favourite movie in 2 different formats: (1) DVD (2) AVI

I would like to keep both format versions of this title in my movies directory if possible, but I wondered how I should structure the titles: both in the same folder, or 2 separate folders?

Tried various things but only one is being found. Any recommendations?

Keep in two seperate folders. MC will create nfo, poster and Fanart for both. Check that in movie preferences you have use folder names for scraping checked.

Previously I had one folder with both the AVI file and the VIDEO_TS folder in it, and that did not work.

It was also a problem of removing title from XBMC library, then having to clean the xbmc db.

After that I created two similarly named folders on the NAS, but appended the DVD folder with 'DVD' - ie. /movies/FavMovieName (year)_DVD

Then I modified the NFO inside the DVD folder to append 'DVD' to the <title> field so I could tell the two apart in the listings.

Probably, I should now put them in a Set, although that's more work and there's no real need for that, and Sets were probably not intended for that purpose.

You could use sets without trouble since all they do is group movies together depending on your criteria. The original idea was for sequels to be associated with the original movies, but there is no reason that you couldn't use sets to group your movies by for example main genre or year or type (dvd,scr, SD, HD etc etc or avi, wmv etc etc) or any other grouping that you choose.

The only thing to remember is that your grouping method applies to the whole library, you can't have both year & genre for example.


The biggest benefit I find with sets is that it shortens the list considerably making it easier to locate the movie you want & of course it groups sequels together that may not be alphabetically adjacent.

So it sounds like it might be OK to put these in a Set then.

For the other ideas for grouping you mention, I prefer to use filtering, as (1) Sets require constant work to maintain -- i.e. you would need to remember to add a newly added movie to the relevant set, and (2) Filtering is dynamic and requires no work apart from initial correct classification with Genres etc.

The real power with filtering will come when the XBMC dudes add a <tags> section in the movies/tv_shows XML schemas to allow assigning of multiple descriptive tags to content for cool finding and "related to"-type functionality.

Filtering, although possible in XBMC from what I've seen (smart playlists etc), needs work to make it really useful and easy to use.

I read a few interesting threads over at xbmc.org on ongoing reworking of the library to restructure it to make it more useful and usable regarding categories and filtering etc.

You're right that Sets are definitely useful in helping to group and locate related sequels etc and things like all James Bond movies or all Pink Panther movies etc, and make the titles list etc shorter.
