I'm don't know how I can help with the Windows Media Player problem, but there are a lot of other players available that media companion can use.

One popular media player is VLC media player: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Just edit the general preference to select different player, and browse to the VLC .exe file. Media Companion will then open files with VLC.
