maybe there could be an option for a certain show to search by that instead of the conventional way. the reason i'd want it is for daily shows that don't really have episode numbers (conan o'brien, david letterman, etc).

I have been wanting this feature too recently so I can scrape late night shows (letterman, jimmy kimmel, daily show, colbert report, etc.)
Is there any implementation planned for this?

Not at this time, i've got my hands full at the moment, although I don't see why I could not add it at some point.
I would need some documentation on how it works, the wiki is blank at the moment.

I don't know if you've ported any of spiff's XBMC scrapers, but he added grab by air date to the TVDB one I believe many months ago if you're still looking for a starting point.
